Durham County cuts costs and increases efficiency with Laserfiche® RioJanuary 24th, 2011 With 265,000 residents, Durham County is home to the famed Research Triangle Park, one of the most prominent high-tech R&D centers in the world. As such, the county’s IT Department has quite the legacy to live up to. “Technical innovation and efficiency are important to our citizens,” says Steve Barden, Systems Development Supervisor for Durham County, “and they’re a top priority for the IT Department as well.” Over the past year and a half, one of the major strategic projects for Durham County’s IT Department has been upgrading and standardizing its enterprise content management (ECM) infrastructure. “In the past, ECM was viewed as a departmental application,” explains Barden. “We came to realize, however, that this is an inefficient and resource-intensive approach, so I stepped in as project manager to coordinate the various installations and get everyone on the same page.”

Rio Builds Foundation for EMR at Cabarrus Health Alliance August , 2010
One Source Document Solutions, a Laserfiche® reseller based in North Carolina, recently upgraded Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA) to Rio. CHA is a public health agency that provides services such as a dental clinic, childbirth classes and immunizations to the citizens of Cabarrus County, NC. The upgrade increases CHA’s users from 30 to 110.
According to Kevin Smith, president and CEO at One Source, the agency purchased the upgrade to support its transition to an Insight EMR system by digitizing and storing patient records. Smith says CHA purchased Rio after he and his colleague Dan Lundy demonstrated to the agency’s IT administrators how Rio could maximize the value of CHA’s investment in EMR.
“We showed that Workflow could mimic the filing structure of the EMR so that CHA could capture, index and file active records before the EMR even comes online,” he explains.
Smith adds that Rio’s named-user licensing also factored into the sale: “Named users were necessary for HIPAA compliance.” CHA also plans to take advantage of Rio’s unlimited servers to bring up a redundant datacenter.
Smith notes that CHA is the third major sale One Source has landed this year where the client’s initial pain point was an impending move to a new office. “In addition to supporting CHA’s move to EMR, Rio will also lead to significant storage savings after the relocation,” he adds.
